London (ANTARA) - Indonesia has remained consistent in its stance to uphold the rule of law to combat crime, mirrored by its dedication to realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Chief of the Indonesian delegation Ambassador/Permanent Representative in Vienna Dr Darmansjah Djumala made the statement at a general debate during the opening of the 28th meeting of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) at the UN Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, on Monday.

The application of the rule of law also demonstrates Indonesia's commitment to achieving the SDGs, particularly goal 16 pertaining to peace, justice, and strong institution, Djumala stated while addressing delegates of UN member states.

In its press statement issued on Tuesday, the Indonesian Embassy in Vienna remarked that the achievement of SDGs is one of the national priorities.

The realization of goal 16 is in accordance with the priority of the Indonesian government's policy as outlined in the nine-point Nawacita agenda under the framework of reforming the system and upholding the law, which is free of corruption, dignified, and reliable, he noted

Indonesia's medium-term national development plan 2015-2019 reflects its legal reform commitment.

In the development plan, the Indonesian government has vowed to enhance the quality of law enforcers by bringing about an improvement in the selection process and welfare, among others.

Djumala further reiterated the significance of strong international cooperation to meeting the target of fulfilling SDGs in 2030 along with stronger partnership among the government, private sector and civilized society.

The Indonesian delegation to the 28th CCPCJ meeting, being held on May 20-24, constitutes representatives of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT), Supreme Court, Law and Human Rights Ministry, Foreign Ministry, and Indonesian Embassy/Permanent Representative in Vienna.

The CCPCJ, formed in 1992 by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) through Resolution 1992/1 serves as the UN's policy-making body in crime prevention and criminal justice. It is also mandated to step up international measures to combat national and transnational crimes and streamline the criminal justice administration system in a more effectual and fairer manner.
