These two offices will receive a larger amount of money from the 2019 state budget compared to others because Papua Governor Lukas Enembe has asked the ministry to rebuild the two-story Elections Commission's building
Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing allocated Rp100 billion (US$7.03 million) to rebuild state offices destroyed by protesters during the rally in Jayapura City, Papua, August 29, Minister Basuki Hadimuljono stated here, Tuesday.

The rebuilding projects will be started next week, the minister said. "Therefore, we expect the wreckage can be cleaned up before the rebuilding begins," Hadimuljono noted. The buildings belonging to the Papua Elections Commission and Jayapura Custom Office were the worst-damaged facilities in the riots, the minister said during his working visit to the city.

"These two offices will receive a larger amount of money from the 2019 state budget compared to others because Papua Governor Lukas Enembe has asked the ministry to rebuild the two-story Elections Commission's building," Hadimuljono explained.

The main structure of the Jayapura Custom Office's building has been badly damaged so it will have to be torn down, the minister said.

Depending on the extent of damage, the rebuilding would take between one to six months before they are completed, Hadimuljono stated. For buildings that only had minor damage, the rebuilding may need one to two months.

However, for public offices that had suffered major damage, the renovation process may take at least six months.

On August 29, a few demonstrations had occurred in Jayapura over racial abuse against Papuan students. The rallies turned into full-blown riots as protesters burned state offices, vehicles, and public facilities.
