Police investigators must probe and unearth the motives of those blamable for the knife attack on Wiranto
Jakarta (ANTARA) - People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Bambang Soesatyo reprehended the assault on Indonesia's top security minister Wiranto in Pandeglang District, Banten Province, on Thursday, hinting at it being an early warning for the National Police.

In conversation with journalists in Jakarta, Soesatyo highlighted the need for police investigators to probe and unearth the motives of those blamable for the knife attack on Wiranto, the coordinating minister for political, legal, and security affairs.

The MPR speaker believes that the attack on Wiranto, carried out 10 days before President-elect Joko Widodo and running mate, Ma'ruf Amin, are sworn-in respectively as Indonesia's president and vice president for the 2019-2024 term on October 20, is really an early warning for the police.

Soesatyo pointed out that the National Police are tasked with maintaining peace and stability throughout Indonesia, adding that community members should not be incited by this incident and await the police investigators to professionally handle and uncover this assault case.

Andre Rosiade, a member of the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party Faction at the House of Representatives, strongly regretted the assault, saying that such an incident must not recur in future.

"We deplore the attack on Mr Wiranto. Any act of violence, including assaulting people, cannot be justified," the candid politician stated.

A resident of Pandeglang District also condemned the attack on Wiranto, who was on a visit to the district to inaugurate a building of Mathla'ul Anwar University.

"We condemn this incident, and the police must thoroughly investigate this case," Lukman Hakim told ANTARA at the Berkah Public Hospital.

The police investigators should not solely arrest the attacker of the minister but also uncover the likely masterminds behind the attack.

Wiranto was injured after a man stabbed him at the Menes Square area of Purwaraja Village, Menes Sub-district, in Pandeglang District on Thursday. Wiranto’s assistant shielded him when the attacker tried to assault him with a knife.

Shortly after the attack, Wiranto was rushed to Pandeglang District's Berkah Public Hospital to receive emergency medical treatment. He was then moved to the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital (RSPAD) in Central Jakarta.
