Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police's Counterterrorism Squad Densus 88 continues to direct efforts to identify the perpetrator behind a suspected suicide bombing that hit the Medan City Police Station, North Sumatra Province, on Wednesday.

"Densus 88, along with Inafis (Indonesia Automatic Fingerprint Identification System) and Labfor (forensic laboratory) teams, are investigating the scene of the bomb blast to ensure the identity of the perpetrator," Chief of the Public Information Bureau of the National Police Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo stated at the National Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The police have also taken the fingerprints of the suspected suicide bomber to draw comparisons with those maintained in the e-ID database.

"The fingerprints taken from the perpetrator will be compared with those in the e-ID database at the Dukcapil (Population and Civil Registration Agency). Hopefully, in not the too distant future, the identity of the perpetrator will be known," he stated.

The team is also investigating whether the perpetrator is linked to a certain terrorist network or is a lone wolf.

A suspected suicide bombing took place at the Medan City Police Station in North Sumatra on Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. local time, allegedly committed by a person wearing a Gojek (online-based motorbike taxi) jacket in its canteen area.

Following this incident, security was beefed up around the city police station located on MH Said Street, Medan. Some personnel of the police's Mobile Brigade Corps guarded the entrance gate and safeguarded traffic access to the location.
