Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police has stepped up security and surveillance near its entrance gates in the aftermath of a suspected suicide bombing attack on the Medan City Police Station in North Sumatra on Wednesday.

"We are stepping up security. We check the belongings of all those entering the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Station as a precautionary measure against any untoward incident," Chief of the Public Relations Service of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Senior Commissioner Argo Yuwono revealed.

All entrances to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Station through SCBD and Semanggi were tightly guarded.

The police also urged motorcyclists to take off their helmets and jackets and drivers to roll down their window glass and get their belongings checked before being allowed entry into the police station.

A suspected suicide bombing struck the Medan City Police Station in North Sumatra on Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. local time, allegedly committed by a person wearing Gojek (online-based motorbike taxi) jacket in its canteen area.

Following the bomb attack, the police conducted a search of the house of the suspected suicide bomber, identified by his initial as R, believed to reside on Jangka Street, Tentram Alley, No. 89B, Sei Putih Barat, Medan Petisah Sub-district, Medan City.

The National Police's Counterterrorism Squad Densus 88 is yet working towards identifying the suspected suicide bomber.

"Densus 88, along with the Inafis (Indonesia Automatic Fingerprint Identification System) and Labfor (forensic laboratory) teams, are investigating the scene of the bomb blast to ascertain the identity of the perpetrator," Chief of the Public Information Bureau of the National Police Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo remarked at the National Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Densus 88 is also investigating whether the suspected suicide bomber is linked to a certain terrorist network or a lone wolf.
