The role of civil components in the UN Peacekeeping Mission must continue to be maintained to face the challenges of peace issues in future
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has elicited greater participation of civilian components in defending world peace and rebuilding post-conflict peace in several regions through the United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Mission.

"The role of civil components in the UN Peacekeeping Mission must continue to be maintained to face the challenges of peace issues in future," Acting Director General for the United States and Europe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Teuku Faizasyah, remarked while opening a seminar titled “International Seminar on Civilian Capacities: Establishing National Rosters for UN Peacekeeping Operations” in Jakarta, Friday.

According to Faizasyah, the civil component plays a crucial role in facilitating peacekeeping and peace-building efforts, as it can offer a humanist touch deemed crucial for the development of post-conflict community structures.

The role of civilians is also deemed necessary for certain situations that cannot be handled by peacekeeping forces, from the military or police elements.

Hence, Indonesia has encouraged the involvement and significant role of the Indonesian civilian component in the UN Peacekeeping Mission. Faizasyah also underscored the significance of stepping up the role of women in the civil component as well as the necessity of fortifying training through global cooperation.

He expounded that in the peacekeeping continuum, peacekeeping efforts had intensified, from monitoring the ceasefire to becoming part of the post-conflict peace-building efforts in an area. The endeavor involved the role of various parties, including the military, police, and civilian components.

Indonesia has raised cooperation on capacity building for the civil element, including through the establishment of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation and the ASEAN Women for Peace Registry.

The program “International Seminar on Civilian Capacities: Establishing National Rosters for UN Peacekeeping Operations” discussed bolstering the capacity of the Indonesian civil component for the UN Peacekeeping Mission.
