Jakarta (ANTARA) - National flag-carrier Garuda Indonesia rerouted its flights to Europe to circumvent the airspace over Iran, after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) banned the country's operators from flying over the airspace owing to soaring tensions.

"Garuda Indonesia will adjust the flight route from and to Europe, which earlier passed over the airspace of Bucharest to the airspace of Egypt and Greece. Hence, all Garuda Indonesia services on the route can run normally," acting Director of Operation of the airlines Tumpal M. Hutapea noted in a statement here on Thursday.

Hutapea affirmed that the airlines will closely monitor developments of the situation in the region.

"We will intensively watch the development of the situation and coordinate with all stakeholders to ensure safety and security of Garuda Indonesia's operation," he remarked.

Director General of Air Transportation of the Transportation Ministry Polana B. Pramesti has earlier issued an Overflying Warning for air transportation operators to be watchful and step up vigil whenever they fly over or plan to fly over the airspace of some Middle East countries, including Iraq, Iran, Persian Gulf, and Oman Gulf, owing to the escalating conflict in the region.

"Taking into account the escalating conflict in the Middle East, especially in Iraq, Iran, the Persian Gulf, and Oman Gulf, all airlines should increase alertness," Pramesti stated.

Airlines that will fly over the airspace are instructed to reroute flights, including those to Saudi Arabia.

"We will always monitor national airlines that have international flights. This is important to ensure safety, security, and best services for those using means of air transportation," he added. Related news: Indonesia's government ready to evacuate Indonesians from Iran
