Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has instructed relevant ministries and non-ministerial government institutions to prioritize efforts to prevent violence against children. "Preventive action can be taken by launching various campaign models including socialization and public education which not only attracts but also encourages people to have social care for the issue of violence against children," he said at the Presidential Office in Jakarta Thursday while opening a limited meeting on handling the cases of violence against children.

The efforts to prevent violence against children must involve families, schools and the community, he said.

Quoting data from the Online Information System for Women and Children Protection (Simfoni PPA), he noted a significant increase in the cases of violence against children during the 2015-2016 period.

"The reported cases of violence against children in 2015 were recorded at 1,975 and the figure rose to 6,820 in 2016," he said.

Among the cases of violence against children, sexual violence was ranked first, followed by psychic violence and physical violence.

The president described the cases of violence against children as "the tip of the iceberg as only a small number is reported."
