Palembang, West Java (ANTARA) - South Sumatra Governor Herman Deru will shortly file a proposal with the Health Ministry over applying large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) in the provincial capital Palembang to stem the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission.

"After receiving the proposal for implementing large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) from Palembang City, we will soon file it with the central government," he stated here on Tuesday.

Deru confirmed that the South Sumatra provincial government had received the proposal through the provincial government’s secretary, Nasrun Umar.

He spoke of filing the proposal with the ministry once the terms and conditions of imposing PSBB in the city were met.

"We will again look at the proposal to check whether the requirements were fulfilled. If it has met the requirements, we will soon pass it on to the ministry," he explained.

Health Minister Terawan Agus Putran has, so far, approved the imposition of PSBB in Jakarta; Bekasi District/Municipality, Depok City, and Bogor District/Municipality in West Java; Tangerang District/Municipality and South Tangerang City in Banten; Pekanbaru in Riau, Greater Surabaya in East Java, and Makassar in South Sulawesi.

PSBB can be imposed in a region at the health minister’s approval. It is effective for a 14-day period and can be extended if the authorities continue to find cases of virus transmissions in the region.

Following the issuance of a ministerial decree, a governor’s regulation should be issued to serve as a form of technical guidance on the enactment of PSBB.

The health minister has rejected proposals to accord PSBB status to some regions, including Bolaang Mongondow District in North Sulawesi, Fakfak District and Sorong City in Papua, Palangka Raya in Central Kalimantan, and Rote Ndao District in East Nusa Tenggara.

The regions were yet to impose restrictions since they had not met the criteria set for PSBB.
