Bandarlampung, Lampung (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI), Bandarlampung branch, has asked the government to thoroughly educate the public as it sets about implementing new normal protocols in the absence of a COVID-19 vaccine.

“Inevitably, if you (the government) want to take (adopt) this policy, the public needs to be made aware that we cannot behave the same as before because vaccine and medicine for this coronavirus are not available," chairman of IDI (Bandarlampung branch), Dr. Aditya, M. Biomed, said here on Wednesday.

He said he would support the steps for transitioning to a new normal being undertaken by the government if there is a road map of what needs to be done and implemented for the transition.

“The people must first be educated that they must not dream that their life would be normal one hundred percent like before the coronavirus pandemic emerged. It means that we have to adapt to this situation," he added.

To implement the new normal protocols, cooperation of every stakeholder is crucial, particularly the public and the government, he stressed.

The government must edify the public to help people gain an understanding of health protocols for new normal in the fields of industry, education, and economy, he continued.

"Everyone must share the same idea regarding how we are going to remain vigilant and protect ourselves by implementing health protocols. If it is true that the new normal will be carried out, it (health protocol) must be applied, so we are not defeated by the virus," he advised.

However, he said, he would be dissatisfied with the new normal order if its application prioritizes "herd immunity", because such a policy is inhuman.

New normal must not become a tool to select people with strong immunity and abandon those with weak immunity, he cautioned.

He said the government must make sure and help people have access to good nutrition and make it easier for them to get affordable nutrition supply.

The government must help people who are unable to meet their nutritional and vitamin intake to increase their immunity, he stated.

"Do not let this merely be a slogan or appeal, but do make sure (that vitamins and good nutrition) are accessible to people, like in other nations," he urged.

He reiterated that the government must edify the public on improving their lifestyle and behavior, given that there are currently no vaccines or medicines to cure coronavirus.
