Amin delivered the statement during the virtual inauguration of a professor at the State University of Surabaya, Monday
"In the wake of the current pandemic situation we are reeling from, I invite you all to jointly fight against COVID-19 and address its multifarious impacts in the health, social, and economic fields," the vice president noted in his video statement here on Monday.
Amin also urged all academics at universities to don a larger role in seeking solutions and coming up with innovations to various issues arising from the pandemic that have been encumbering the health sector and economic recovery.
"I have high hopes from the world of higher education to take on a bigger role in finding innovations and breakthroughs that can accelerate the recovery of the people's lives to return to productivity," he stated.
During the event that coincided with the Introduction to Campus Life for New Students of the State University of Surabaya, the vice president also reminded students and teaching staff to remain disciplined in applying health protocols in their day-to-day activities.
All university academicians should be able to set an example for the community in applying health protocols, such as wearing masks, washing hands with soap and running water, and maintaining physical distance between people.
"I especially urge universities to disseminate information and edify all on a massive scale. Higher education, in this case, must set an example and offer guidance to the community," he stated.
The number of new COVID-19 cases in Indonesia surpassed three thousand for four consecutive days, with new cases on Sunday recorded at 3,444, thereby bringing the total tally to 194,109, according to the country's Task Force for COVID-19 Response.
According to a report released by the Task Force on Sunday, 2,174 people had recovered from COVID-19, thereby pushing the total count of recoveries to 138,575.
Meanwhile, the death toll has reached 8,025, with 85 people succumbing to the disease within the last 24 hours.
On Thursday (Sept 3), the task force reported 3,622 new cases within 24 hours.
The figures suggest that the country currently has 47,509 active cases or patients receiving treatment or undergoing self-isolation and 89,701 suspected patients placed under surveillance.
On Sunday, the authority examined 27,979 specimens from 13,225 people at 320 laboratories across the country.
Since the first confirmed cases emerged in Indonesia on March, the authority had examined 2,433,752 specimens from 1,401,513 people.
COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in 34 provinces, with 489 cities and districts reeling from the impacts of the pandemic.
