As many as 50 personnel have been named suspects and detained (in the case).
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The military police have named 50 Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel as suspects in the recent attack on the Ciracas police station in East Jakarta, Army Military Police Commander, Lt. Gen. Dodik Widjanarko, said.

“As many as 50 personnel have been named suspects and detained (in the case),” Dodik told the press at the Army Military Command headquarters here on Wednesday.

The soldiers were named suspects after the authority investigated 81 personnel from 34 units between September 3 and September 8, 2020.

Three of them have been questioned further, while 23 others were interrogated as witnesses and allowed to return to their units.

“The investigation process is still under way, in accordance with the law,” Dodik said.

Among the 50 suspects was Second Private MI, who reportedly spread a hoax about him being beaten up by some civilians, he informed. The false information reportedly enraged his fellow servicemen, who then attacked the Ciracas police station, he added.

Based on the investigation, MI reportedly spread the false information to cover up his consuming liquor and meeting with a single-vehicle accident.

“Among the motives of the suspect to spread false information was the fear that his unit would discover that he had (consumed) some liquor before he had the single-vehicle accident," Dodik elaborated.

MI did not have a driving license and did not bring the vehicle registration document (STNK) for the motorcycle, he added.

On August 29, 2020, a group of unidentified persons had attacked the Ciracas police station located on Jalan Raya Bogor in East Jakarta.

The attackers had destroyed several facilities at the police station and set them ablaze around 2 a.m. local time on August 29, according to the East Jakarta Fire Information Service.

Several cars and carts parked on the street were reportedly damaged in the attack.
