We had acknowledged that the virus knows no state boundaries, (thus) no one is safe until everyone is.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized the United Nations' (UN's) role in today's circumstances wherein conflicts persist, especially amid hardships in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, affirming that "no one is safe until everyone is".

The head of state drew attention to several disputes ongoing across the world, whilst poverty and hunger also linger on. The principles recorded in the UN Charter and international law are frequently overlooked, including on matters of territorial sovereignty and integrity.

"We are all concerned about such a situation, and our concern has increased in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. While we must all unite and cooperate to fight the outbreak, what we observe today are sharper disunity and rivalry," Jokowi noted during his speech at the 75th UN's General Assembly on Wednesday, Jakarta time.

Speaking in Indonesian in a pre-recorded video, Jokowi urged all states to apply a win-win solution approach by forging mutually beneficial relations with countries since the pandemic has had wide-ranging impacts, especially in the health and social-economic sectors.

"We had acknowledged that the virus knows no state boundaries, (so) no one is safe until everyone is," Jokowi emphasized.

"If the friction and rivalry continued, I am concerned that the everlasting foothold for stability and peace would become unsteady or even go away. World peace, stability, and prosperity may become more difficult to achieve," the president affirmed.

Amid such circumstances, the UN is tasked with playing its role since the organization was formed right after World War II for creating peace and preventing the recurrence of other world wars in future.

"At the 75th anniversary of the UN, we should likely pose the question of has the world that we envisaged been realized? I think we have the same answer to that it has not," Jokowi stated.
