This is where the UN should play a role in strengthening collective global leadership
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), in his speech at the 75th United Nations General Assembly, urged countries to be responsible in contributing and being part of the solution to realize a peaceful, stable, and prosperous world.

Jokowi believes that all countries should foster a spirit of collaboration and stronger global leadership to create a better world.

"This is where the UN should play a role in strengthening collective global leadership," Jokowi stated while participating virtually in the UN high-level meeting from Jakarta on Wednesday morning.

Jokowi acknowledged that in international relations, countries will always safeguard their national interests.

"However, we must not forget that all of us have the responsibility to contribute to being part of the solution for peace, stability, and prosperity in the world," he affirmed.

In his speech, Jokowi also highlighted the history of the UN, formed 75 years ago, with the objective of preventing a great war -- such as World War II -- from recurring, so that the world could become more peaceful, stable, and prosperous. The Indonesian president also stressed that war will benefit no one.

"There is no point of celebrating victory among ruins or becoming the largest economic power in the midst of a sinking world," he emphasized.

Furthermore, Jokowi also highlighted the crucial role of the United Nations, as a world body, based on multilateralism.

"During this 75th anniversary of the UN, we must ask ourselves … have we succeeded in creating the world that we dreamed of? I believe all of us will have the same answer… not yet," he noted.
