Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's House Speaker, Puan Maharani, called on the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) to continue to maintain its integrity and professionalism in addressing myriad challenges in future.

The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) supports all steps to boost professionalism of the TNI, Maharani noted in a statement here on Monday to coincide with the 75th anniversary of TNI on Oct 5.

"The TNI must become more professional and protect the Indonesian people and every inch of the Indonesian homeland," the house speaker remarked.

The Indonesian military has persistently played a crucial role in maintaining Indonesian sovereignty, and currently, its role has become increasingly necessary to strengthen mutual cooperation in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maharani believes the TNI should step up its professionalism in synergy for the country and continue to be the pride of the Indonesian people.

The country's military always dedicates itself to the nation and state in accordance with TNI's Sapta Marga, or seven pledges, including during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

"TNI soldiers are present in the efforts to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, starting from enforcing preventive measures to handling the impact of the pandemic," she noted.

The ceremony to commemorate TNI's 75th Anniversary, themed "Synergy for the Country,"
was held online and led by Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

A series of activities during the commemoration comprised the civic mission, a pilgrimage to the Heroes' Cemetery in Kalibata and to the grave of TNI’s first Commander General Sudirman. Related news: President Jokowi urges TNI-Polri officers to achieve leapfrog progress
