"How we make use of data," Lilik Kurniawan said during a webinar themed "La Nina Phenomenon. What should be done?", here on Sunday.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has been supplying various weather forecast data that could be accessed by the public. BNPB also has the InaRisk application which maps disasters in various regions in Indonesia, according to him.
The existing data can be used by the government and the public to plan various things so that La Nina which is in sight, would not cause major losses, both material and non-material losses .
La Nina is a natural phenomenon that causes rainfall in an area to fall in excessive intensity. If it is not properly anticipated, it can trigger a hydrometeorological disaster which is often detrimental.
He said that La Nina could trigger natural disasters, hence the authorities should make sure the durability of various public facilities. Besides, the central and local governments should also anticipate food security as farming areas could be affected by natural disasters such as flooding.
BMKG has forecast that La Nina is developing in October 2020, and it could trigger a 40 percent increase in rainfall, compared to normal condition.
Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati urged people in a number of disaster-prone areas to be vigilant and carry out independent mitigation efforts.
