This will serve as a model for other provinces that plan to develop food estates.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) believes that the food estate model in North Sumatra can be replicated by other provinces planning to develop a similar project.

Jokowi made the statement during a visit to the Humbang Hasundutan food estate in North Sumatra on Tuesday.

"This will serve as a model for other provinces that plan to develop food estates," Jokowi noted.

The president noted that the government had begun implementing the food estate development program in two provinces: North Sumatra and Central Kalimantan.

Some 60 thousand hectares of land is available in North Sumatra, of which 30 thousand hectares will be developed as a food estate.

The food estate will cover some districts: Humbang Hasundutan, North Tapanuli, Central Tapanuli, and Pakpak Bharat.

In Central Kalimantan, some 165 thousand hectares of potential farmlands will be developed into a national food estate. Until now, some 85,500 hectares have functioned as productive farmland.

The development of food estates is expected to be completed by 2022 and to boost rice and corn production, with an expected yield of two tons of rice per hectare.

The food estate project has become one of the National Strategic Programs for the 2020-2024 period.

Apart from the two provinces, the government has also contemplated on developing similar clusters in the provinces of Papua, East Nusa Tenggara, and South Sumatra. Related news: C Kalimantan's food estate expansion over 30,000-ha land area: Jokowi
