Jakarta (ANTARA) - Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Edhy Prabowo invited youngsters to partake in advancing the Indonesian marine and fisheries sector.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is ready to offer assistance in accessing capital and business technical guidance.

"In the marine and fisheries sector, we have vast fishing and cultivation potential. Hence, when it comes to employment, there are several of them out here. To this end, I invite young people to take part (in advancing the sector)," Minister Prabowo stated during the commemoration of Youth Pledge Day in Jakarta, Wednesday.

Prabowo pointed out that it was not a difficult job for creative youngsters to become fishermen, cultivators, and salt farmers to process fishery products.

The minister noted that currently, technology had simplified the production process with optimal results, coupled with the presence of extensive literature that can be studied to boost productivity and develop businesses.

Prabowo cited as an example the application of semi-intensive technology in vannamei shrimp ponds that could produce nearly 40 tons per hectare of yield, while conventional ones produced at most two tons per hectare.

"Remember, back then, there was neither social media nor information technology. Wired telephones had their drawbacks. However, they (young people in the past) upheld a strong spirit to make Indonesia independent. They were keen to see Indonesia rise up," he affirmed.

With swift technological advancements, the minister is optimistic that youngsters would continue to uphold this spirit to fight a different struggle.

The minister pointed to success achieved by many youngsters in the marine and fisheries sector in the fields of cultivation, capture, processing, and marketing.

"Our market is too big," he affirmed.

Prabowo expressed readiness to provide access to capital and technical guidance for young people keen to enter the marine and fisheries sector.

The minister believes access to capital can be through the banking channel with the people's business credit program.
