Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA) - Candidate number 2 for Medan mayor, Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution, made a solemn promise to install 20 thousand surveillance cameras as part of his efforts to safeguard the city's residents from criminals and hoodlums.

Nasution made the pledge while meeting with members of the Indonesian Chinese communities in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra Province, on Wednesday.

"When the faces and moves of those looking to disrupt the city's security and committing crimes can be monitored through closed-circuit television (CCTV) devices, they will more easily be identified," he stated.

Installing the 20 thousand CCTV units around Medan was part of the preventive measures to thwart the crime rate and crack the whip on hoodlums in Indonesia's third-biggest city after Jakarta and Surabaya, he remarked.

Nasution, the son-in-law of incumbent President Joko Widodo, also pledged to build several clusters of parking areas for motorists in response to the tendency of several Medan residents to park their motorcycles on the roadsides.

The Medan city mayoral election, scheduled on Dec 9, will be contested by the Nasution-Aulia Rachman pair and candidate pair number 01, Akhyar Nasution-Salman Alfarisi.
