Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA) - A suspected drug trafficker in the East Java provincial capital of Surabaya was shot dead by police while attempting to resist arrest.

The 43-year-old drug trafficking suspect, identified by his initials as FP, was a resident of Bangkalan on Madura Island, East Java, chief of the drug detective unit of the Surabaya City Police 1st Inspector Yudhi Syaiful Mamma stated on Thursday.

"We forcibly took firm, measurable action, as he opened fire at our personnel while they attempted to arrest him," Mamma remarked.

The police arrested the suspected drug trafficker and a driver in a rented car on Kebonsari Street in Surabaya after spying on him, he noted.

FP was rushed to the Bhayangkara police hospital for gunshot wound to his chest. However, FP breathed his last, and his body was taken to Dr Soetomo Regeral General Hospital in Surabaya.

The police also seized a revolver used by FP to avoid being caught by its personnel and later searched the rented car where they found a bag filled with some 20 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.

The crystal meth is being kept at the Surabaya City Police Station.

"We also took the driver of the rented car to the Surabaya City Police Station for questioning," he remarked. (INE)
