Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo urged provincial governors to reinstate health protocols and sought stringent public discipline in implementing them after reactivated lockdown measures in several countries over spiking COVID-19 cases.

"We know that Bangkok has reinstated lockdown two or three days ago, Tokyo is under emergency status, London is also under lockdown, as well as the entire area of Britain, due to the exponential spread of COVID-19," President Widodo stated during a limited meeting held through videoconference from the Jakarta State Palace on Wednesday to discuss handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccination organizing plans.

The head of state also urged all parties to make all-out efforts to implement health protocols.

Widodo highlighted survey results that showed a decline in motivation for upholding discipline in implementing health protocols among people.

"(The discipline in) wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands has declined. To this end, I urge all governors to reinstate health protocol discipline, as the survey showed that it has gone down," he remarked.

The president stated that Indonesia's strategy to handle the pandemic remains the same, which comprises handling the health sector, followed by social protection as its second focus, while the third pertained to economic recovery.

"The key to economic recovery is how we can all work hard in stopping the spread and handling COVID-19," Widodo noted.
