Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA) - The Kampar Tiger Team of the Riau Regional Police successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle 20 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine from Malaysia and arrested the perpetrator, identified by his initials as AI.

AI was arrested in Rupat, Bengkalis District, on Monday following a tip-off received from the Indonesian Navy's Dumai Naval Base, Senior Commissioner Victor Siagian, Director of the Riau Police's Narcotics Investigation, noted in a press statement here on Wednesday.

On receiving the tip-off, the Riau Police's Directorate of Narcotics deployed the Riau Police's Kampar Tiger Team, led by Head of Sub-Directorate I Adjunct Senior Commissioner Hardianke, to probe the attempted smuggling in Rupat.

Al confessed to the police that a drug network kingpin had ordered him to deliver the drugs by a minibus from Rupat to Dumai City on the promise of being paid Rp8 million per kilogram of crystal methamphetamine once the drugs arrived in Dumai.

"The team immediately moved and stopped the car and then checked and searched it. Two bags were found wrapped in boxes containing 20 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine," the police officer revealed.

The Riau Police will investigate for further developments in the case to expose the international drug network.

The suspect will be charged in line with Article 114, Paragraph (2) Jo. Article 112 paragraph (2) of the Republic of Indonesia Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics. He is liable to face death penalty or imprisonment for a minimum of five years and a maximum of 20 years.
