Jakarta (ANTARA) - A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Tual City in the eastern Indonesian province of Maluku on early Tuesday, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The quake, which hit at 1:33 WIB (Western Indonesia Time), was centered 113 kilometers northwest of Tual, at a depth of 66 kilometers, the BMKG noted on its official website.

However, no tsunami warning was issued following the quake.

The quake was the latest in a series of earthquakes, with a magnitude of above 5.0, to have struck Indonesia since early this year.

On January 15, 2021, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake, followed by several aftershocks, rattled the districts of Majene and Mamuju in West Sulawesi, claiming more than 100 lives and injuring hundreds of others.

Earthquakes regularly strike various parts of Indonesia since the country lies on the Circum-Pacific Belt where several tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activity.
