Jakarta (ANTARA) - The police is conducting a thorough investigation into the alleged involvement of 12 police officers in a case of drug abuse in Bandung, West Java.

"We must look at the legal aspect of the case on the field, be they are mere consumers or traffickers. Hence, investigators need to probe it profoundly," Chief of the Public Relations Division at the National Police Inspector General Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono stated here on Thursday.

Yuwono made the statement over the possibility of the National Police imposing a sanction of death penalty against the Astanaanyar Police chief, identified by her initials as YPD, for allegedly abusing drugs.

The police will conduct an evaluation of all its cops as a preventive measure against drug abuse in the National Police, he affirmed.

The alleged case of drug abuse came to the light after the National Police's internal affairs division on receipt of a public complaint that was later followed up the West Java Provincial Police's internal affairs division.

The 12 police cops were arrested at a hotel in Bandung on Wednesday (Feb 17). Based on the result of a urine test, some were found to have consumed crystal methamphetamine.

No evidence was seized during the raid.

Former chief of the National Police General (ret.) Idham Azis had earlier stressed on imposing death penalty on any police officer found guilty of abusing drugs.

"If police officers themselves abuse drugs, they must be sentenced to death because they are aware of the law," he stated.

The move must be part of the learning process for police officers. Hence, police officers tasked with combating drugs are strictly banned from being part of the drug chain, he remarked. (INE)
