Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - The Denpasar district court in Bali province has sentenced a 30-year-old man to 10 years' imprisonment for possessing 1.7 kilograms of hashish and nine marijuana plants.

At the proceeding, held virtually from the district court on Thursday, the defendant, identified as Giovanni Biondi, was also asked to pay a fine of Rp1 billion or face another three months in jail.

A panel of judges presided over by Angeliky Handayani Da found the defendant guilty of possessing Class I narcotics in the form of marijuana plants, weighing more than 1 kilogram, or more than five marijuana plants.

The verdict was lighter than what the prosecutors had sought.

The prosecutors had earlier demanded that the defendant be sentenced to 15 years in jail and fined Rp1 billion, or face another six months in jail.

Both the defendant and public prosecutors accepted the verdict.

The Bali Provincial Police arrested Bondi at a villa in Banjar Anyar Kelod, Kerobokan village, North Kuta sub-district Badung district, on October 13 last year. (INE)
