Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Trade Muhammad Lutfi has said that Sail Tidore 2021, an international maritime tourism event, will help accelerate economic development in North Maluku.

"Hence, we must promote North Maluku as a national and international tourist destination by encouraging international yachts to sail to Indonesian waters," the minister said in a statement issued here on Monday.

The event will be organized jointly by the Ministry of Trade and the Tidore Islands administration.

Mayor of Tidore Islands, Ali Ibrahim, and representatives from the Ministry of Trade recently held a coordination meeting to discuss preparations for the implementation of Sail Tidore 2021.

Suhanto, the ministry's secretary general and concurrently the secretary of the central committee for Sail Tidore 2021, said the ministry and the Tidore Islands municipality and other stakeholders must establish close coordination and good communication during the preparations.

In accordance with the Decree of the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs for Organizing Sail Tidore in 2021, the Minister of Trade has been appointed as the OC chairman.

Entitled ‘Tidore, a World Heritage City, the glue of the nations’, the event is scheduled to be launched on April 9, 2021 at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Jakarta.

A series of activities with the tagline ‘Road to Sail Tidore 2021’ will be organized from April to June this year as part of the event. The peak event for Sail Tidore 2021 will take place from September 20-26, 2021.

The activities aimed at promoting tourism, culture, and local wisdom of North Maluku will include the Tidore Festival, the Legu Gam Ternate, and the Jailolo Bay Festival.

According to Suhanto, Sail Tidore 2021 will be an important event for the government of North Maluku province.

Sail Tidore is expected to be enlivened by the presence of several ships from Spain and Portugal, which are undertaking a round-the-world trip to commemorate Portuguese explorer Magellan’s expedition 500 years ago, he said.

For the peak event at Tugulufa Beach on September 23, 2021, tourists from 100 countries are expected to flock to the City of Tidore Islands.

During the coordination meeting, Mayor Ali Ibrahim expressed the hope that the people of North Maluku province, especially the City of Tidore Islands, would participate and enliven the cultural and art activities planned under Sail Tidore 2021.
