In a press statement here on Friday, Ahmad expected some places where crowding occurs, such as tourist attractions, to be closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
"The regulations must be consistent and consistently enforced," she emphasized.
Ahmad expected the public to be aware that homecoming activities can be a means of transmission of the virus. One way of increasing public awareness to not return to their hometowns is by enforcing regulations.
Theoretically, the combination of assertive action and awareness of the dangers of COVID-19 could prevent people from going home.
"Public figures and influencers can also provide the same understanding," Ahmad remarked.
Public awareness that the number of COVID-19 cases is still high is not sufficient. The public must also comply with the government-imposed restrictions since awareness is not always followed by adherence to rules.
"Being aware and then not doing something is a different matter. We are aware that cigarettes are dangerous, but smokers will still smoke (even when they know about the dangers of smoking posed to their health)," Ahmad stated.
Meanwhile, Pandu Riono, epidemiologist at the University of Indonesia (UI), admitted that prohibiting people from going home for the Eid Al-Fitr holiday was quite challenging to do.
The public is aware of the government’s ban on it, yet they are looking for ways to keep going home. In current situations, the public is increasingly not concerned with the number of COVID-19 cases.
"Hence, the people are now ignorant," Pandu stated.
Decreasing public awareness of the dangers of COVID-19 could increase the number of positive cases. Currently, the number of COVID-19 cases across Indonesia has reached 1.58 million.
