Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - A police officer from Mengwi police precinct in Badung district, Bali province has been discharged from duty and detained over his alleged role in dealing drugs.



"He has been discharged from his duties before being dismissed from the police service," Badung police chief, Adjunct Sen.Coms.Roby Septiadi, said.



He said the officer was arrested in Denpasar on May 8, 2021 for drug dealing, but did not divulge his identity.



The Denpasar police's anti-drug squad seized 84 grams of crystal methamphetamine from the suspect at the time of arrest, he added.



Domestic and transnational drug dealers see Indonesia as a potential market owing to its large population and millions of drug users.



Drug trade in Indonesia is valued at almost Rp66 trillion.



Data indicates that Indonesians from all strata of society are falling prey to drugs regardless of their socio-economic and professional backgrounds.



The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) recently arrested a policeman in Mukomuko district, Bengkulu province on charges of trafficking drugs over a period of five years.



The officer was identified as 1st Adjunct Inspector ES, 43, the BNN-Bengkulu Office head, Brig.Gen.Toga Habinsar Panjaitan, informed on May 25, 2021.



In February this year, the West Java Police's Propam detained 12 policemen, including the chief of the Astanaanyar district police precinct, for alleged narcotic consumption.



In November last year, a police officer in Deli Serdang district, North Sumatra province was sacked over his involvement in a drug-related offense.

The dismissal of Chief Brigadier FS was announced during a roll call led by deputy chief of the Deli Serdang police precinct, Adjunct Sen. Coms. Julianto P. Sirait, on November 23, 2020.



"Through this roll call, it is declared that Chief Brigadier FS is no longer a police officer," Sirait had said.



In June last year, another policeman was arrested for consuming drugs at a hotel in Mataram, the capital of West Nusa Tenggara province.



The policeman, identified as EW, and three other people were reportedly caught consuming crystal meth during a raid and placed under police custody. Nineteen grams of crystal meth were also seized from them.



In July, 2020, at least 260 policemen in South Sumatra underwent a rehabilitation program to recover from drug addiction. (INE)
