Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology and the British Council Indonesia Foundation conducted a test to evaluate the English skills of thousands of teachers nationwide.

At a press conference on Thursday, Dr Praptono, the ministry's director of teacher and professional education, emphasized the importance of qualified English teachers for Indonesia's prosperity in future. The teachers could help the next generation make strides internationally by appropriately facilitating them.

Over two thousand English teachers from junior high schools (SMP), senior high schools (SMA), and vocational high schools (SMK) took the online test.

The online assessment used EnglishScore, a cellular English test from British Council, which over 150 countries use.

Country Director of British Council Indonesia Hugh Moffat expressed pride in helping the ministry assess the English skills of Indonesian teachers coming from locations that are otherwise difficult to access.

The application was chosen since Android and iOS operating systems can run it, thus accessible by the English teachers from secluded regions.

The Ministry of Research and Technology shared the assessment results via a secure dashboard that can also display individual or joint results.

The English assessment is a part of the Teacher Certification Program, which is a joint program between the ministry's Directorate General of Teachers and Educational Personnel and British Council Foundation Indonesia.

The collaboration is held to gauge the English language skills of English teachers across Indonesia.

The program also identifies teachers in need of further support and training.
