Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Industry of Republic of Indonesia continues to encourage the development of the domestic gaming industry so that it can be more competitive in the global arena. The industrial ecosystem needs to strengthen the value chain and optimize local potential in order to take this strategic step.
Based on data compiled by Newzoo in 2016-2019, the revenue of the gaming industry in Indonesia continues to experience a significant increase. In 2019, Indonesia earned USD1,084 billion in revenue from the gaming and eSports industry. This achievement propels Indonesia to become the largest gaming industry market in Southeast Asia and the 17th largest in the world. In addition, there are also 52 million Indonesian gamers.
To support one of today’s industries with the brightest future potential, Huawei Indonesia participated in the Festival Bangga Game Buatan Indonesia, organized by the Ministry of Industry and divided into two main events, namely the Bangga Game Buatan Indonesia webinar and Indonesia Gameday BizMatch.
“Attention to the industrial value chain will produce an integrated and comprehensive ecosystem. Building a good content industry ecosystem takes collaboration and interaction between sectors. Intellectual Property (IP)-based industries can collaborate with each other in areas such as product and IP development with investments from both the government and the private sector,” said the Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics (ILMATE) of the Ministry of Industry, Taufiek Bawazier, in his opening remarks at the Bangga Game Buatan Indonesia webinar.
According to Taufiek, with such a huge market potential in Indonesia, domestic game developers are thus encouraged to optimize the opportunities that exist today. "In 2020, the market share for local industries stood at 0.4% only. On the other hand, this means there is still plenty of opportunities for domestic game developers to do business,” he said.
Taufiek added that the development of the 5G cellular network will have a major impact on technology-based industries, one of which is the gaming industry. "5G network technology, which has a combination of high-speed connectivity, low latency, and wide coverage, will trigger many changes to gaming industry trends," he said.
Meanwhile, Huawei Indonesia Developer Support Manager Steven Pongidin said, "Right now, the prevalent gaming trend in Indonesia can be found on the mobile platform. Game developers need to utilize this trend as a momentum to seize a large market share amid tight competition with games from outside of Indonesia. To that end, Huawei – through Huawei Mobile Services – helps Indonesian developers improve efficiency in terms of development time and costs, allowing them to introduce their products to the market at a faster pace.”
As a step towards building the gaming industry ecosystem in the country, the Ministry of Industry has initiated the construction of the Bali Creative Industry Center (BCIC) as a center for promotion, incubation, and training of human resources for the animation and game industry. The BCIC, which was built since 2014, is expected to be put to good use by the local gaming industry so that innovative ideas and new creators may emerge, and quality products may show up to compete with global products.
