Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Ferianus Asso died in the wee hours of Sunday morning following intensive treatment at the Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Jayapura, Papua Province, since August 20 for a gunshot wound.

Asso, the 29-year-old man, sustained a gunshot wound when police officers in Dekai, Yahukimo District, attempted to disperse a group of demonstrators on August 16.

On the day he was accidentally shot, Asso was admitted to a local hospital in Dekai, the capital of Yahukimo District, but he was then moved to the police hospital in Jayapura for further medical treatment.

Papua Police Chief Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri informed ANTARA on Sunday that he still awaited a comprehensive report on Asso from the head of the Papua Police's Health Division.

In the aftermath of the accidental shooting, the situation in Dekai and Yahukimo is relatively peaceful, he stated while instructing his men to continue their routine patrols to instil a sense of safety and security among the locals.

The rally, in which Asso and several other people participated, demanded that Viktor Yeimo from the National Committee of West Papua (KNPB) be released from the Kotaraja Mobile Brigade headquarters' custody.
