We hope to procure around 100 electric buses by the end of this year
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta's regional-owned enterprise PT Transportasi Jakarta, the operator of the capital city's bus rapid transit system TransJakarta, has commenced an operational trial for one electric bus to serve commuters along the Blok M-Jakarta City Hall route.

"The regional authority has collaborated with bus rapid transit operator PT TransJakarta to test an electric-powered public bus transportation," Deputy Head of the Jakarta Provincial Transportation Office Chaidir remarked here on Friday.

According to Chaidir, the operational trial for the electric bus aims to support the implementation of Government Regulation No. 55 of 2019 on development of the Battery-based Electric Vehicles Program.

"This is TransJakarta's second electric bus operation trial after the first trial concluded in December 2020. TransJakarta's electric bus trials aim to support the implementation of Government Regulation No. 55 of 2019, as we are projecting more electric vehicles to be operated in future," Chaidir stated.

Apart from aligning with the government regulation, the electric bus trial also abides by Jakarta Governor's Instruction No. 66 of 2019 on Air Quality Control in Jakarta, he pointed out.

President Director of PT TransJakarta Sardjono Jhoni informed that the company had cooperated with bus operator agent firm PT Higer Maju Indonesia to conduct the operational trial of the electric bus.

The electric bus will serve the Blok M-Jakarta City Hall route for three months, and commuters can use the service free of charge. On account of the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, the bus operator has placed a passenger cap of 25 people.

After the trial, Jhoni expects the bus rapid transit system to operate five thousand electric buses by 2025.

"We hope to procure around 100 electric buses by the end of this year. We will continue to phase in 2,300 buses from next year until we achieve our target of operating five thousand buses in 2025," Jhoni stated.
