Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The dedication of sports communities across Indonesia has resulted in the success of the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON), the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) has said

"Today, October 15, 2021, coinciding with the commemoration of the 83rd Anniversary of KONI, we close the XX Papua PON successfully. It is our dedications, the sports community, for Indonesia," the general chairman of KONI, Marciano Norman, remarked in a written statement received by Antara here on Friday.

He also lauded the cooperation between stakeholders, comprising local governments and the XX Papua PON Organizing Committee led by Papua Governor Lukas Enembe, for the national sports event.

"XX Papua PON is a momentum for the unity of Indonesia brought by Papuan people through sports event. It proves that Papua is an inseparable part of Indonesia," he noted.

In addition, he expressed his gratitude to contingents from 34 provinces for competing in the event.

Furthermore, the success of the XX Papua PON is also a momentum for Indonesia to revive from COVID-19, Norman remarked.

"We have proved that in the midst of the pandemic, our sports heroes still manage to excel by implementing strict health protocols," he said.

Three international records were broken at the XX Papua PON weightlifting events, he noted.

In addition, there were 35 new national records,—2 swimming records, 2 shooting records, 3 athletics records, 11 powerlifting records, and 17 weightlifting records, he informed.

Moreover, 55 PON records were broken—3 shooting records, five finswimming records, 9 powerlifting records,12 athletics records, and 26 swimming records, Norman said.

Meanwhile, the West Java contingent managed to hold on to its title as the defending champion after collecting 133 gold medals, 105 silver medals, and 115 bronze medals, he added.

The Jakarta contingent took second place with 110 gold medals, 91 silver medals, and 100 bronze medals, followed by East Java, which bagged 110 gold, 89 silver, and 88 bronze medals, he said.

Host Papua earned fourth place after pocketing 93 gold medals, 66 silver medals, and 102 bronze medals, he added.
