The tsunami threat has been called off, but aftershocks are still occurringJakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) called on people to remain alert of the risk of aftershocks and to avoid buildings damaged by the 7.4-magnitude earthquake in Flores Sea.
"We appeal (for your vigilance) because aftershocks are still occurring. We urge the public to avoid cracked or damaged buildings caused by the earthquake," BMKG Head, Dwikorita Karnawati, noted at a virtual press conference on Tuesday.
Karnawati urged the public in earthquake-affected areas to check if their residential buildings were earthquake-resistant or not damaged by shocks that compromised structural stability before returning to their respective homes.
The agency has called off the tsunami early warning due to the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that hit 112 kilometers northwest of Larantuka in East Flores District, East Nusa Tenggara, at 10:20 local time, Tuesday.
With the early warning no longer valid, people in the affected areas could return to their homes.
The agency noted at least 15 aftershocks after the first earthquake at 10:20 WIB. Until now, they recorded a maximum strength, with a magnitude of 5.6 from the aftershocks.
"The tsunami threat has been called off, but aftershocks are still occurring. That is why we urge you to remain calm. However, do ensure that the house building is still strong enough to inhibit," she emphasized.
Moreover, Karnawati cautioned the public, especially those residing in northern East Flores, Sikka Island, northern Sikka, and Lembata Island, to not conduct activities in the coastal areas and riverbanks.
The BMKG has continuously issued warnings on a national scale in response to various natural disaster risks.
