Bandung, W Java (ANTARA) - West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil urged the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to actively furnish information on disasters and their mitigation.

The knowledge could be shared in the form of animated videos to make people understand the context, he noted.

"I suggest the communication division to educate and disseminate information through animated videos with a sense of crisis. Hence, everything starts with danger or vulnerability," Kamil stated here on Thursday.

Kamil directly conveyed the idea to BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati during her visit to Bandung.

The governor noted that during the current rainy season, the threat of La Nina phenomenon still loomed large over the Indonesian territory, including in West Java Province.

The La Nina phenomenon is a pattern of the cooling of Sea Surface Temperature (SML) in the central Pacific Ocean below normal conditions.

La Nina causes an increase in monthly rainfall in Java, with the accumulation of monthly rainfall rising up to 70 percent.

La Nina can also cause hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, flash floods, landslides, strong winds, and cyclones.

Meanwhile, based on the BMKG data, Karnawati noted that almost all areas in West Java will experience rainfall. This year's rainy season is different from the previous years owing to the influence of La Nina.

"Analysis of the development of the rainy season shows that all areas of West Java will experience rainy season. The anomaly of rainy season this time is different from two years ago and the previous years," she noted.

Karnawati noted that in December, a 10-70 percent increase in rainfall is likely in Bogor, southern Cianjur, eastern Bekasi, southern Bandung, Karawang, Indramayu, Tasikmalaya, northern and central Majalengka, Garut, Ciamis, and Banjar.

Sukabumi, southern Majalengka, Pangandaran, Kuningan, and Cirebon are areas prone to experiencing rainfall above 70 percent.

In January, rainfall will increase by 10 to 70 percent in northern Bogor and Subang, southern part of Purwakarta, part of Karawang, northern part of Indramayu, part of Bandung, Garut, Ciamis, Kuningan, Cirebon and Majalengka.

Eastern part of Bandung and northern part of Sumedang will experience rainfall above 70 percent during the same period.

In February, a 10-70 percent increase in rainfall will be experienced over Bogor, western part of Karawang, northern part of Cianjur, West Bandung, Sumedang, most part of Majalengka, eastern part of Indramayu, southern part of Cirebon, and northern part of Ciamis.

Meanwhile, rainfall above 70 percent will occur in Depok, eastern part of Bekasi, Karawang, Purwakarta, Subang, western part of Indramayu, eastern part of Majalengka, southern part of Cirebon, Banjar, and Pangandaran.

Karnawati stated that in March, rainfall will increase by 10-70 percent in the northern parts of Bogor, Karawang, Indramayu, Majalengka, Ciamis and Cirebon and southern part of Subang, Bandung, and Sumedang.

Areas experiencing rainfall above 70 percent are Cikarang, western part of Karawang, central part of Subang, central part of Bandung, northern part of Cirebon, and Tasikmalaya.

"It seems that people need to stay vigilant during the rainy season until March, although the rainfall will peak in January and February. However, there will still be an increase in rainfall above 70 percent of normal in March," Karnawati stated.

The BMKG had recommended local governments, communities, and related parties to manage water resources and reduce disaster risks in areas, with high rainfall potential, by preparing and taking precautionary measures against the likelihood of hydrometeorological disasters.

"We had discussed with the public works and public housing minister regarding the current condition of water management that should be taken into account. The ministry had emptied reservoirs to accommodate the rainwater," she stated.
