I, as PBTI head, feel proud of our young athletes' achievement on the global stageJakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Andi Sultan struck gold in the freestyle male cadet category at the Online 2021 World Taekwondo Poomsae Open Challenge Final, according to a statement released by the Indonesian Taekwondo Executive Board (PBTI) on Friday.
During the evaluation conducted from December 20 to December 23, he managed to score 6.220, the board informed.
Sultan defeated Iran's M Habibzadeh, who had to settle with the silver medal after scoring 5.960, it added.
Meanwhile, the bronze medal was won by O. Martinez from Mexico and H.Shi from Macao who scored 5.750 and 5.500, respectively, the board said.
Indonesia entered two other athletes in the competition, M. Nadim Faturrahman and Naylana Khansa Janneta from West Java.
Faturrahman participated in the recognized male cadet category and Janneta in the freestyle female cadet category, it informed.
Faturahhman missed the bronze in a close contest with his Hong Kong adversary, who managed to score 7.310 against Faturahhman's 7.300. Meanwhile, Janneta placed fifth after scoring 5.380, the board informed.
PBTI's mentoring and achievement department head Yefi Triaji lauded the performance of the three Indonesian athletes at the event.
"Especially, since it was participated by the best athletes who had previously won a championship and rank in the top eight in the world," he remarked.
Meanwhile, head of PBTI H.M Thamrin Marzuki said Indonesian athletes worked hard amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mentoring played a role in the result they achieved and it is proceeding well, he noted.
"I, as PBTI head, feel proud of our young athletes' achievement on the global stage. This shows that, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the athlete mentoring in the central and region is proceeding optimally," he remarked.
