Despite the Omicron variant threat, we must be alert in continuing to follow the new habits for the safety of all
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Health Office intends to maintain the new habits and health protocols, especially in means of public transportation, as a precautionary measure against transmission of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

"The COVID-19 condition is expected to get better. Despite the Omicron variant threat, we must be alert in continuing to follow the new habits for the safety of all," Jakarta Health Office's Head of Disease Prevention and Control Dwi Oktavia remarked during TransJakarta's public discussion here on Wednesday.

The office head also expressed optimism that the implementation of new habits in public transportation can be sustained, both by business players and public transportation users in the midst of easing of the Level 1 Public Activities Restrictions (PPKM) in Jakarta.

Oktavia believes the new habits followed in means of public or mass transportation, include prohibition on speaking, eating, and taking masks off.

"We laud transportation entrepreneurs, who have systematically attempted to form and sustain new habits. If we ease it, there will definitely be a new wave," Oktavia remarked.

She pointed to the likelihood of transmission of diseases, such as COVID-19, tuberculosis, acute respiratory infections, and pneumonia, via air and droplets in means of transportation.

The Jakarta Health Office pointed to eight ways to prevent contracting infectious diseases while taking means of public or mass transportation: avoiding the use of handphones; not touching the face; protecting self from coughing or sneezing exposure; avoid touching poles, handles, doors, and chairs; not eating or drinking; avoiding rush hours; washing hands after getting off public transportation; and cleaning luggage and bags.

Meanwhile, the Level 1 PPKM in Jakarta, which is valid until January 3, 2022, especially in means of public transportation, is implemented with stricter health protocols, with 100-percent passenger capacity.
