Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) confirmed on Wednesday that it had arrested the mayor of Bekasi on graft charges earlier in the day.

"Right now, the Bekasi mayor and several other people are being interrogated," KPK chief Firli Bahuri said in a written statement released on Wednesday.

KPK acting spokesperson Ali Fikri and KPK deputy chief Nurul Ghufron informed earlier that the agency had conducted an operation in Bekasi, West Java, between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.. on Wednesday.

"KPK caught red-handed state apparatuses in Bekasi, West Java, this afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.," Ghufron said.

All the people, including the Bekasi Mayor, identified by his initials as RE, were taken to the KPK Red and White Building in Jakarta for questioning, he added.

As per the Penal Code (KUHAP), the anti-graft body has 24 hours to determine the legal status of those nabbed for graft, he said.

So far, KPK has not released details about the graft case. However, it said it will disclose details regarding the case soon.

Ghufron asked the public, particularly the media, to be patient while the KPK investigates the case.
