Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesia Reading Ambassador will visit 33 cities across Indonesia as part of the "Indonesian Reading Ambassador Literacy Safari Program" of the National Library of Indonesia from January 18 to April 2, 2022.

According to a press statement received on Monday, the program is part of efforts to cultivate a culture of writing and reading, as well as bolster the People's Literacy Index.

The event will be themed "Mainstreaming Literacy."

Currently, Indonesian citizens face challenges at the second level of literacy, namely they have limited access to reading material, according to the press statement.

"According to UNESCO, the ideal figure toward reading material access is that one person accesses three books per year," it added.

Currently, in terms of the ratio of book availability, one book is read by 90 Indonesians, it said.

This statistic is based on the People's Literacy Development Index (IPLM) study conducted by the National Library of Indonesia, it added.

The Literacy Safari will feature several events such as "literacy orations" by local officials on the importance of reading and writing, art performances by local artists, literacy discussions or seminars, training on writing and book publishing methods.

In addition, documentation in the digital era, volunteering in the literacy community, managing literacy communities, and interviewing literacy figures will also be covered by the program, as per the press statement.

On Sunday, literacy enthusiasts, members of Rumah Dunia's Writing Class, and university students were invited to join the Safari Literacy Team, it said.

The names of the Literacy Safari Team were released by Serang's Library and Archive Office in Juang Building, Serang, Banten, on Monday, it added.

Next, the names of the Literacy Safari Team will officially be released by the National Library of Indonesia on January 18, it informed.

The event will be held via webinar and will be attended by figures such as head of the National Library of Indonesia, Muhammad Syarif Bando, and Speaker of Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR), Rano Karno.
