Jakarta (ANTARA) - A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi Province, on Saturday, at 9.26 a.m. Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB), according to information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The quake's epicenter was located at 3.67 degrees northern latitude and 126.82 degrees eastern longitude, some 39 kilometers southeast of Melonguane in Talaud Islands and at a depth of 12 kilometers, the agency noted on Saturday.

The quake's location was 147 kilometers northeast of Tahuna in Sangihe Islands, 192 kilometers from Ondong, Sitaro Islands, in North Sulawesi, and 325 kilometers northwest of Ternate, North Maluku.

The BMKG stated that the earthquake had no potential to trigger a subsequent tsunami.

Meanwhile, the agency had earlier noted that the 6.6-magnitude earthquake that rattled Banten Province on January 14, 2022, can serve as a lesson to all on disaster mitigation preparedness.

The disaster did not cause any casualties, deputy for geophysics at BMKG, Suko Prayitno Adi, noted while adding that the material losses were extensive.

"The incident is a lesson for us to share our knowledge and readiness on disaster mitigation, so that we can provide the best solution," he noted during a webinar on the Banten earthquake on Friday.

Through sharing of lessons, the fear of people living in earthquake-prone areas in the southern Java regions is expected to be alleviated, according to Adi.

In addition, the community can be better prepared to face disasters, so that there are no casualties, he stated.

Studies on the Banten earthquake are expected to provide recommendations for improving the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) and strengthening synergy between the BMKG and other related institutions and agencies, Adi affirmed.
