The increase in the prices of commodities, including of several foodstuffs, due to the wet weather also contributed to the inflation.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Inflation in Indonesia rose in January 2022 owing to strong public consumption, a Finance Ministry's official stated.

The January 2022 inflation reached 2.18 percent year-on-year (yoy) as compared to 1.87 percent yoy in December 2021.

"The increase in the prices of commodities, including of several foodstuffs, due to the wet weather also contributed to the inflation," Chief of the Fiscal Policy Board at the Finance Ministry Fabrio Kacribu stated in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Kacribu made assurance that the government will always maintain the prices of domestic energy, such as fuel oils, despite the increase in commodity prices.

"The move is aimed at ensuring that the people's purchasing power for the energy demand remained under control," he affirmed.

Kacribu noted that core inflation had also continued its upward trend to reach 1.84 percent yoy as compared to 1.56 percent yoy in December 2021.

The rising demand along with increasing public mobility has raised the core inflation amid risk of imported inflation due to the high commodity prices, he noted.

Meanwhile, volatile food price inflation rose to 3.35 percent yoy in January 2022 as compared to 3.2 percent in December 2021.

He attributed the high demand to the improving COVID-19 situation that encouraged price hikes due to high demand from households and accommodation and restaurant sectors.

"The rise in cooking oil price has been brought under control, thanks to the government's intervention and reference price," he remarked.

The domestic market obligation (DMO) and domestic price obligation (DPO) policies set by the Trade Ministry are expected to be effective to control the cooking oil price in the market, he remarked.
