Jakarta (ANTARA) - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded inflation of 0.56 percent in January 2022, triggered by an increase in the price of several foodstuffs.

"The food, beverage, and tobacco group contributed 0.30 percent to inflation in January, with inflation reaching 1.17 percent," BPS Head Margo Yuwono stated at a virtual press conference in Jakarta, Wednesday.

Yuwono explained that three commodities contributing to inflation in the foodstuffs category were chicken meat, with 0.07 percent; fresh fish, 0.06 percent; and rice, 0.03 percent.

Other groups that contributed significantly to January's inflation were housing, water, electricity, and household fuel, which contributed a 0.10-percent share to the 0.51-percent inflation.

"The component with the biggest contribution is household fuel having a 0.06-percent share due to the increase in the non-subsidized LPG prices,” he remarked.

In addition, the household equipment, tool, and routine maintenance group also contributed 0.05 percent, with inflation at 0.79 percent, followed by personal care and other services with a 0.04-percent share and 0.62-percent inflation.

During this period, the groups that contributed to deflation and suppressed the inflation rate in January were information, communications and financial services that contributed 0.01 percent and a 0.13-percent deflation.

"The information, communication, and financial services group contributed to deflation due to a decrease in the administration costs of money transfer by 0.01 percent," Margo remarked.

Meanwhile, the BPS also noted that 85 cities contributed to inflation and only five cities experienced deflation in January 2022.

The highest inflation was recorded in Sibolga, at 1.53 percent, and the lowest in Manokwari, at 0.02 percent. Meanwhile, the highest deflation occurred in Kotamobagu at 0.66 percent and the lowest in Jayapura at 0.04 percent.

"The cause of high inflation in Sibolga is due to the 0.16-percent increase in the price of broiler chicken, followed by lemongrass, with 0.16 percent, and tuna, with 0.14 percent," he noted.

With the January 2022 inflation of 0.56 percent, inflation for the calendar year was recorded at 0.56 percent and on an annual basis (yoy) at 2.18 percent.

BPS recorded year-on-year inflation for the first time, the highest since May 2020, at 2.19 percent. Likewise, inflation in January 2022, which was higher than January 2021, was recorded at 0.26 percent.
