In addition, the attempt will shift the national economic center closer to the eastern region of Indonesia.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Relocating Indonesia’s capital city (IKN) is one of the strategies to achieve Indonesia’s Vision 2045, Deputy for Regional Development at the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Rudy S. Prawiradinata stated.

“The attempt aims to improve the lives of our future generations. It is one of the strategies to achieve Indonesia’s Vision 2045," Prawiradinata noted during a virtual discussion broadcast on the YouTube channel of RRI NET OFFICIAL on Wednesday.

The deputy explained that drastic measures, such as moving the country's capital city to create a new economic center, are deemed necessary to achieve the vision.

“In addition, the attempt will shift the national economic center closer to the eastern region of Indonesia,” Prawiradinata noted.

The deputy stated that during the last three to four decades, the Sumatra and Java regions -- the western region of Indonesia -- had contributed to around 85 percent of Indonesia's economic growth.

Although the government and related stakeholders had made numerous attempts to optimize growth in other regions, the result had yet to be optimal.

Thus, relocation of the nation's capital city in 2045 is expected to optimize equitable economic growth in Indonesia.

“In the last 30 to 40 years, the economic contribution of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua, and other eastern regions had only reached around 15 percent. Hence, the government targets the regions’ contribution to reach 25 percent by 2045,” Prawiradinata affirmed.

The deputy assessed that realizing the target was replete with challenges. However, the government believes that the eastern regions held vast potential.

Although the capital city is relocated, Jakarta will remain as one of the nation’s economic centers. In the new capital city, which is called Nusantara, various new economic activities will be established, he stated.

"Nusantara will be developed as a green city since we are aware that the forests of Kalimantan Island are one of the lungs of the world. Hence, we will not ruin nature. We will maintain its function," he stressed.
