"If this Psychology Bill is passed into law, psychological practitioners and scientists can have legal protection to contribute more purposefully and be organized in many fields," Handoyo said here on Thursday.
Psychology can play a role in various life settings, for example, in the prevention and handling of terrorism, human resources development and management in companies, the management of education and schools, and the handling of mental health, he elaborated.
"The role of psychology is becoming more relevant in the increasingly complex and rapidly changing world. Therefore, psychologists and psychological scientists need to improve competence, both in terms of practice and knowledge to make optimal contributions to the country, at the level of individuals, groups, organizations, and communities," Handoyo said.
Meanwhile, counterterrorism and deradicalization expert, Zora A. Sukabdi, said there are 18 risk factors of terrorism that can be divided into three domains: motivation, such as economic; ideology, such as believed values; and capabilities, such as intellectual ability.
"These factors become important when carrying out professional rehabilitation of terrorism perpetrators or potential people," Sukabdi added.
Knowledge and experience are crucial in the psychological field, such as in anticipation of acts of terrorism and rehabilitation efforts, she said.

Furthermore, there are two approaches for mitigating possible terrorism acts: the syndrome approach, which is related to personality or traits, and the instrument approach, which deals with rational choice, she added.
These approaches can be applied in mitigation and measures for identifying the risks, needs, and responses of individuals and groups involved in terrorism acts, she said.
The passage of the Psychological Practice Bill has been discussed and included in the Priority National Legislation Program under the House of Representatives (DPR RI).
