Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The Meratus Geopark Management Agency (BP Geopark Meratus) in collaboration with ANTARA News Agency held a photo competition themed, "Meratus Towards a World Geopark."

The competition, open to domestic and foreign participants, is a means of introducing the Meratus National Geopark.

"Through this photo contest, the public, both at home and abroad, are expected to gain a broader understanding of the beauty of Meratus and attract tourists to visit," BP Geopark Meratus Head Nurul Fajar Desira stated in Banjarbaru, Monday.

Development of the geopark is ultimately aimed at improving the local people's economy through tourism in addition to conservation, Fajar stated.

Photographs eligible for submission for the competition are those captured between January 1, 2018, and June 21, 2022, with the subject of one or more geosites along the Meratus Geopark.

More information about this photo contest is available on the AntaraKalsel portal and @antaranewskalsel Instagram account.

Meanwhile, information regarding the Meratus Geopark is available on the official website of BP Geopark Meratus http://meratusgeopark.org, the @meratusgeopark Instagram account, and the Meratus Geopark YouTube account.

The 200 million-year-old Meratus Mountains have a complex geological history and declared as a National Geopark area in 2018.

South Kalimantan has 74 potential geosites spread across nine districts and cities, including Tabalong, Balangan, Hulu Sungai Tengah, Hulu Sungai Selatan, Tapin, Banjar, and Kotabaru.

Currently, BP Geopark Meratus is readying a proposal to be submitted to acquire the UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG) status for the area.
