"Our digital economy will grow eight times faster than our GDP growth," Thohir said at the Economic Outlook 2022 webinar in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The result is extraordinary, he remarked. By 2030, the contribution of Indonesia’s digital economy will reach Rp4,531 trillion, he added. This is certainly potential that must be considered in addition to the potential of natural resources.
"If we look at Southeast Asia, Indonesia's digital economy is the largest and will continue to grow in terms of the market. Innovation and investment in start-ups must be balanced or returned to Indonesia, not making Indonesia as a market only," he emphasized.
However, he said that he was not anti-foreign, but wanted to underline the importance of Indonesia as a big country with extraordinary digital economic potential. With that asset, Indonesia must have a roadmap to ensure economic growth, job creation, and investment.
"Because Indonesia will continue to grow until 2045, and it will boost global economic world through Indonesia," he stated.
Earlier, Thohir had urged SOEs to become catalysts for Indonesia's digital economy. He said that Indonesia must take advantage of the momentum provided by digital disruption.
Digital disruption has not only posed challenges but also opened up opportunities for increasing Indonesia's competitiveness in the global arena, he added.
The magnitude of Indonesia's digital economic potential is estimated to continue to grow to Rp1,736 trillion by 2025, which reflects significant growth compared to Rp112 trillion in 2015, Rp560 trillion in 2019, and Rp616 trillion in 2020.
The biggest contribution to Indonesia's digital economy comes from the e-commerce, transportati
on, food sectors, online travel, and online media.
