Jakarta (ANTARA) - Creators should record or register their works with the Law and Human Rights Ministry so that their creations can receive legal protection from the state, the ministry's Special Staff Bane Raja Manalu has said.

"Especially since Minister Yasonna Laoly continues to fix the digital bureaucracy within the ministry," he added in a statement issued on Saturday.

"Back then, recording intellectual property required more than two days. Now, it only takes 10 minutes," he said during a discussion on ‘Legal Protection toward Artwork’ in Karo, North Sumatra, on Friday.

During the discussion organized by Creative Karo Community (K3), he said that along with registering creations, creators need to provide a letter that proves the work belongs to them.

"After the data is complete and Rp250 thousand is paid, a certificate that states that the work belongs to us comes out. It only takes 10 minutes," he informed.

One of the top programs of the ministry in 2022 is Intellectual Property Automatic Recording (POPHC), which automatically records all intellectual properties, Manalu informed.

By registering their intellectual property, creators have the right to receive protection from the state. However, in general, registering intellectual property does not have any direct economic impact, he said.

"Meanwhile, registration of intellectual property such as music, creation of songs and such, which is then utilized by an individual or an institution, can have a direct economic impact because it has a commercial goal," he explained.

Intellectual property refers to a creator's exclusive rights that come into effect automatically after a work is produced and published, Manalu emphasized.

"In my opinion, an idea has zero value if not realized. The hard part is the execution," he said.

Intellectual property has an expiration date, which is the lifetime of the creator plus 70 years, he informed.

Hence, the next generation can still receive the economic benefit of intellectual property, such as for books, songs, dances, and dramas, he said.

"Secondly, there is a protection for 50 years in the future since the creation is published, such as a photographer's work," he added.

"Then, there is a protection that lasts for 25 years since publication, such as applied artworks," he said.
