"The food problem we are facing is part of the global problems that are also being faced by other countries in the world. Hence, we need to take anticipatory measures, so that we will have better food security," Moerdijat noted in a statement here on Thursday.
The deputy speaker made the statement while opening an online discussion themed "Anticipating the Threat of a Food Crisis Impact of the Ukraine-Russia War" at the Denpasar 12 Discussion Forum held on Wednesday.
Moerdijat noted that all stakeholders should take a cue from various current global conflicts by continuing to strengthen the resources owned.
According to the deputy speaker, this step is taken to guarantee food security at least during the recovery phase from the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Food security is a condition when everyone has social and economic access to sufficient nutritious food for a productive and healthy life," she pointed out.
She noted that in 2020, several world organizations had comprehensively analyzed the threats and indications of food insecurity and malnutrition globally based on in-depth reflections on the pandemic situation.
She remarked that based on the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) record, those conditions had been worsened by the Ukraine-Russia conflict, which led to a 17.1-percent increase in the global commodity prices of grains, including barley, wheat, and corn.
"Crises that occur in the world often disrupt stability of the world's food commodities due to spikes in trade interventions and restrictions on food exports," she stated.
The MPR deputy speaker opined that those conditions must be anticipated by taking strategic and measured actions through sound collaboration between stakeholders and the community, so that the country can realize better food security.
