Jakarta (ANTARA) - National Police chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, lauded Indonesian workers for holding the May Day Fiesta peacefully at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Stadium, Jakarta, on Saturday.

The activity was held to commemorate the 2022 International Workers’ Day. The celebration had been postponed as May 1 fell in the Eid al-Fitr holiday period.

In his remarks at the event, the police chief said that the solemn, peaceful, and joyful implementation of the large event showed that Indonesia is a modern democratic country.

The police force is committed to keeping workers safe while they convey their aspirations regarding their welfare in any democratic space, such as the May Day Fiesta event, he added.

"In addition, we express our highest appreciation and honor to all fellow workers who have participated in handling the COVID-19 pandemic for about two years," he remarked.

Workers have participated in several COVID-19 mitigation efforts by observing the health protocols, complying with the community activity restrictions (PPKM) rules, getting vaccinated, as well as assisting in the distribution of basic necessities assistance to the community, he noted.

"All praises be to God, currently we have injected more than 408 million vaccination doses, making us the fifth country with the largest vaccination coverage. It has been possible thanks to the contribution of all workers throughout Indonesia," he said.

According to the COVID-19 Task Force’s website, as of May 14, 2022, as many as 199,556,458 Indonesians have received the first COVID-19 vaccine dose.

Meanwhile, the second and third vaccination doses had been administered to 166,160,498 and 42,415,365 people, respectively.

At Saturday’s event, Prabowo wished a joyful commemoration of Labor Day to workers across Indonesia.

“Keep on fighting and striving to bring welfare for all workers," he added.

Earlier, chairperson of the Labor Party, Said Iqbal, had informed that the event was attended by around 50 thousand people, including farm laborers, fishermen, housemaids, temporary workers, housewives, online taxi bikers, as well as other people from the working class.

"Thanks to the assistance of the State Secretariat and the Indonesian National Police, we can use GBK Stadium with the condition that we will keep applying strict health protocols," he said.
