Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Health stepped up its vigilance over the risk of potential transmission of monkeypox by domestic and foreign travelers in the country.

"Indonesia's efforts include preparing circulars to increase vigilance, both in the regions and port health offices, for health offices, hospitals, and so on," the ministry's spokesperson, Mohammad Syahril, stated here on Tuesday.

Based on the World Health Organization (WHO) report as of May 21, 2022, he cited that monkeypox is a disease that requires attention of the global community, as most cases are reported from patients not having a history of travel to endemic countries.

The spokesperson remarked that the endemic countries comprised Benin, South Sudan, Ghana, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.

Syahril further explained that monkeypox disease was actually reported in several non-endemic countries, such as Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

"The total confirmed cases reported amount to 40 cases globally, with one case being probable and 61 suspected cases. There have been no cases of death from monkeypox," he noted.

Syahril cautioned that despite zero cases of monkeypox in Indonesia, the public is urged to remain aware of its transmission.

"Some cases are related to participation in large gatherings that can increase the risk of contact, through lesions, body fluids, droplets, and contaminated objects," he stated.

Furthermore, Syahril highlighted that another effort made by the government was to update the situation and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) related to monkeypox that can be downloaded through https://infeksiemerging.kemkes.go.id/.

Monkeypox prevention and control guidelines have been revised on the basis of the conditions and WHO updates containing surveillance, clinical procedures, risk communication, and laboratory management, he pointed out.
